Somerset College BA (Hons) Surface Design students are flying high after submitting their entries for a prestigious airport competition.
The new Flybe Training Academy due to open this year near Exeter Airport , invited colleges in the South West to submit ideas for an art installation to complement the futuristic building.
Four Somerset College students currently preparing for the major final degree show found the time and extra energy needed to present their ideas for the art competition. Submitted ideas included placing glass swallows into the pavement, Perspex model planes in the shape of paper planes, large steel round coins reflecting vapour trails in the sky and life-size steel panels fretted into the shape of a small boy with a toy aeroplane.
Students Kirstie Montague, Heidi Thomas, Sue Edwards and Sally Sawyer said: ‘It’s exciting to have done a real life project. The brief gave us lots of freedom to be creative and Somerset College has been supportive in helping us put together professional, high-standard submissions.’
Judging takes place later this month.
