Local business lend their support to student success

Businesses from across Somerset lent their support to Somerset College's Technology Divisional Awards on Thursday 4 December.

Companies including LightCurve, Denmans Electrical Wholesalers, Haynes Publishing, Proweld UK, Hickleys, UK Hydrographic Office, Taunton Chamber of Commerce, Somerset County Council and BOC all gave awards at the ceremony.

More than 30 students were recognised at the awards ceremony, including students returning from university to receive their award.

Chris Lacey, Head of Technology at the College, said: ‘I am really pleased to have the backing of all these companies at the awards ceremony. They are major players in the technology field and to have them supporting our students is outstanding.

‘We work hard to foster strong links with local and regional companies that are well known in the technology industries. Their experience is invaluable to our students and I hope to continue to have such strong links with them all.'

The ceremony not only recognised the achievement of the students, but also many of the College's partner organisations that work with the College.

Awards handed out included the University of Plymouth Award for Computing to Rebecca Wright, The Somerset County Council Award for the Student Showing Enterprise in Engineering 2007-2008 which went to Ashley Vearncombe and Automotive Engineering Higher Education Student of the Year 2007/2008 awarded to Kevin Bartholomew.

Chris said: ‘Last year was a very successful year, these results are just rewards for all the hard work students, tutors and partners put into ensuring students met their full potential.'

Somerset College offer more than 40 courses in the Technology Division, including FdSc Computer Games Technology, National Diploma Motor Vehicle Repair and Technology and FdSc Engineering (Design and Manufacture).

Somerset College offer university level courses through a partnership with the University of Plymouth.

The College are holding an Information Evening on 20 January 2009 and Taster Workshops for Further Education courses on 31 January 2009.

Taunton Deane and West Somerset Consortium will also be launching the new Diploma at an Open Evening on Monday 26 January. There will be more information to follow on this new qualification in January.
