Military aircraft enjoy happy landings at Somerset College
A trio of famous military aircraft landed on the playing fields at Somerset College last week.
The Apache, Wildcat and Lynx helicopters landed as part of a celebration to mark the change in role of 6th Battalion the Rifles (6 Rifles). It has now become 6 Regiment Army Air Corps (Rifles).
After landing, the helicopters remained on the ground for an hour. This gave the 300 staff, students, local cadets and members of the public who had gathered an opportunity for a closer look. Everyone then retreated to a safe distance, to witness the magnificent sight of the aircraft taking off.
Talking about the event, Somerset College’s Curriculum Area Manager for Public Services, Claire Cavill, said: “It is a bit of a one-off, and is fantastic for Somerset College, and for the public services curriculum area in particular. We’ve a number of students who are really interested in pursuing a career in the Armed Forces, so the chance to come and speak to the military here today, and see the helicopters up close, has been wonderful.”
