New Look career for fashion graduate
Fashion graduate Mia Puzey completed her course at Somerset College and started work at New Look the following week.
Mia found the transition into work very smooth as she took part in placements organised by the College at New Look before she joined the company.
Mia said: ‘I was very pleased to receive a First. I still can't really believe it, but when I think back to all of the very late nights and early mornings sticking down design boards, unpicking garments, getting ready for presentations, it makes it all worth it.
‘Starting employment is a very daunting experience. Luckily for me I was introduced to New Look through placements, which made it a lot easier as I knew what to expect of the company before I started here.'
Mia's role at New Look involves ensuring the quality and fit of garments are suitable to go into store. She has the chance to visit different areas of the business around the UK and many other countries.
Mia said: ‘New Look have been a brilliant employer to start my career with. They get you stuck in and learning all aspects of the business. They also give you the opportunity to see other sides of the business around the country.
‘Unless I had been on placements I would not have had a clue what job roles were out there as there are so many different directions to go in. The best way to get an insight is through placements. I feel very lucky to have got a job straight out of uni.'
Mia found that the BA (Hons) Fashion course gave her a wide variety of skills, such as pattern cutting, garment construction and design/illustration. This gave her a detailed knowledge of all areas of the industry and helped her to decide a career path. The course is also flexible as she studied fashion and textiles for the first year and then specialised in fashion when she decided which path to take.
Imelda Hughes, Head of BA (Hons) Textiles and Fashion Programmes, said: ‘It is always very rewarding to see graduates receive their awards on Graduation day, especially when they work so hard throughout the course.
‘The course we offer is extremely flexible and prepares them for work in the real world. Through placements at local, national and international companies they are able to make a better judgement of what career they want to take.'
More than 350 graduates received their awards on Friday 24 October, and 19 of them received firsts - the highest number ever to receive the awards. Somerset College deliver degree level courses through a partnership with the University of Plymouth.
