Opportunities in Design
Would-be designers won’t be short of career opportunities in Somerset, thanks to the number of big-name companies in the county
Somerset is home to many iconic brands. The list includes luxury handbag designer Mulberry, award-winning wedding dress designer Sassi Holford, and world-renowned shoe maker Clarks.
That means there are loads of opportunities for up-and-coming designers to make their mark with some of the biggest names in the business.
The UK’s specialised design industry employed more than 50,000 people in 2014 and a further 8,000 jobs are expected to be created over the next five years. In Somerset, the future of the industry is even brighter, with an anticipated growth of 30 per cent by 2020.
Jobs available within the industry include fashion design involving textiles, clothing, shoes and jewellery, and interior decoration. Also included is graphic design, which is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the South West according to the latest government statistics.
With an average wage of around £26,000 per year, there’s much to recommend a career in this burgeoning field. So why not take your first steps to working in design by studying at Somerset College?
