Somerset student shortlisted for competition with international artists
Fine art degree student Andrea Rowbotham has been shortlisted for the Needhams Open Art Competition and will feature in an exhibition in April.
Andrea, who studies BA (Hons) Fine Art at Somerset College , submitted two paintings, both of her pieces were chosen for the final exhibition.
Andrea will face competition from 12 other artists from around the world including Spain and Canada.
First prize will be a solo exhibition at Needhams in Cambridgeshire during 2009. The winner will also be offered representation from arts promotion agency Ovenden Contemporary.
Andrea said: ‘I am really pleased to have been shortlisted in this prestigious competition. It is really exciting to be part of an exhibition that will run for longer than a month.'
Andrea's paintings are inspired by a break she took by herself in North Wales. She was inspired by the landscape of the area and based her collection on her surroundings. Andrea has used acrylic paints and mixed media to turn her sketches into paintings.
Andrea said: ‘The scenery was spectacular. I spent time on my own, which felt strange as I rarely find myself in that situation - on my own surrounded by nothing but fields. The pictures portray my emotions of being in the landscape by myself.
‘Using mixed media is great, it produces weird and wonderful effects as many of the materials repel each other to form intricate patterns.'
Stuart Rosamund, Fine Art Tutor at Somerset College, said: ‘Andrea has produced an amazing collection of work, it looks stunning. She deserves to be shortlisted amongst this calibre of international artists, we hope she will do well.'
