University Centre Somerset (UCS) is delighted to build on the success of its Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for the Further Education and Skills sector, by offering a new full-time option, enabling trainees to complete the qualification in one year.
Teaching in the Further Education (FE) and Skills sector can be a rewarding and fulfilling career choice for several reasons:
Impact on students: Teaching in FE provides an opportunity to work with a diverse group of students from a range of backgrounds and ages, helping them to develop skills and knowledge that can transform their lives. It can be incredibly fulfilling to see students’ progress and achieve their goals.
Wide range of subjects: FE covers a wide range of subjects, from academic to vocational courses. As a teacher in FE, you may have the opportunity to teach in your area of expertise or to explore new subject areas.
Innovation: FE is a sector that is constantly evolving, with new technologies and teaching methods being introduced all the time. This provides an opportunity for teachers to innovate and try out new approaches to teaching and learning.
Career development: There are many opportunities for career development in FE, including opportunities for progression to senior positions and the chance to take on additional responsibilities such as leading a department or curriculum development.
Community: FE colleges often have a strong sense of community, with staff and students working together to achieve shared goals. This can create a supportive and positive working environment.
The programme, which is offered in partnership with the University of Plymouth, is the only PGCE in the area to offer training in the Further Education and Skills sector and is instrumental in equipping local trainees with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in today's rapidly evolving educational landscape.
With a strong emphasis on both theoretical and practical learning, both part-time and full-time PGCE trainees are encouraged to develop their skills through hands-on experience in real-world settings, including work placements at Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC).
Vanessa Hughes, Head of Creative, Digital and Professional Studies, says, "We are immensely proud of the contribution that our PGCE programme has already made to the Further Education sector in Somerset, and are delighted to add a new full-time route to the PGCE offer at UCS. With its innovative approach to teaching and learning, UCS is helping to shape the future of further education in Somerset and beyond.”
