Computing and Digital Technologies Foundation Degree

Course Overview

The Computing and Digital Technologies Foundation Degree at UCS is one of the first Digital HTQs in the country and is available as such this September. Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) have been specifically developed with employers and businesses so that students will get the training, knowledge, and skills they are looking for, unlocking high-skilled and highly paid jobs.

This Foundation Degree will provide a rigorous study of the theory and principles underlying Computing and Digital Technologies; developing and challenging students to establish a high degree of expertise in the application, integration and critical evaluation of a range of Computing and Digital Technologies, principles and practices.

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop products and relationships with regional, national and international companies involved with Computing and Digital Technologies, as well as foster their own professional skills to support the South West. It also enhances employability of students by providing training with industry-standard software and access to specialist resources such as the Extended Reality, Cyber Security and Networking Labs.

The modules studied may include:

  • Programming and Software Fundamentals
  • Advanced Programming and Software Engineering
  • Networking and Cyber Security Essentials
  • Advanced Networking and Cyber Security
  • IoT Device Programming
  • Web Application Development
  • User Experience (UX) and Full Stack Development

You will be equipped with a range of valuable skills securely underpinned by relevant and up-to-date knowledge of the principles of computing and modern digital technologies. You will have access to a well-resourced and specialised cyber security and networking laboratory where they will have the opportunity to practice the skills and knowledge gained in the theoretical sessions.

The programme fosters autonomy within the student body in their professional development and a professional approach, bound by professional codes of conduct appropriate to employment within the computing sector.

You will have the opportunity to develop products and/or relationships with regional, national and international companies involved with Computing and Digital Technologies as well as foster your own professional skills. The programme incorporates various modes of delivery for flexibility and diversity, helping to support your learning by tools such as, Smartboards, Virtual Learning Environments, Forums, online tutorials and learning materials.

Assessment

Assessment Methods

Our specialist teaching staff have hands-on experience of working in computing, and offer expert tuition in labs and classrooms. Assessment is through a mix of assignments, practical work, reports and presentations. There are no formal examinations, only coursework. As part of the course, you will be required to undertake projects both in groups and individually.

A prominent feature is the use of in-course assessment, where modules are assessed by the teaching team as you complete them. This course is typically delivered on-site two days a week across the academic year.

Entry Requirements and Progression

Progression

The Foundation Degree is a perfect platform for progression on to the BSc  (Hons) Top-up Degree. You will be equipped with a range of computer skills that are all highly desirable to prospective employers.

Entry Requirements

Typically entrants will possess:
A minimum of 64 UCAS points from a full Level 3 qualification in a related subject area.
At least four GCSEs at grade 4 and above including English and maths (recognised Level 2 in English may be considered).

Fees

The course fee is £8500.00* per year of study.
