Former Student Becky Returns to Inspire Musicians

Last week, UCS and BTC were delighted to welcome former Music student Becky Cockram back to deliver a superb workshop for current and prospective students at the Bridgwater campus.

Becky studied Music at the College from 2015 to 2017. Her debut EP was the very first release on the College record label, Brainworks. The release gained national radio play and positive reviews from music media, and represents a standard for all music students at UCS and BTC to aspire to.

Whilst at College, Becky secured a booking agent and recording deal with Orange Palm Records, and in the summer of 2017, she played her festival debut on the main stage at Bestival and went on to study at Goldsmiths University.

Since then, her music career has gone from strength to strength under her solo moniker Rowe, and more recently with her band Deary, who have achieved a Number 1 in the vinyl singles charts and have signed to influential record label Sonic Cathedral. Deary’s recent release, Fairground, has garnered excellent reviews from influential magazines such as CLASH and Far Out, as well as a remix by legendary indie act Saint Etienne.

During the workshop, Becky discussed the transition from college to university as a student and young artist, how to network on and offline, and her experience of launching into the music industry post-university. Then followed a really exciting opportunity for students as Becky listened to, and offered valuable feedback on, their own music.

After the workshop, Becky was joined by Housewives, Henri Bolger and China Bears for a relaxed gig at Bar Brunel. The gig offered a perfect opportunity for prospective students to get to know their future classmates and lecturers whilst listening to some great music in a cosy setting.

There are still spaces available to study on the Music Production HND at our Bridgwater campus, starting this September. Find out more and apply at https://www.somerset.ac.uk/courses/music-production-hnd.html
