Royal College of Art Master's students share expertise with University Centre Somerset students

Yesterday our Foundation Degree Fine Art students had the privilege of a visit by students from the world’s number one Art & Design postgraduate university, the Royal College of Art.

Second year students Yuko Obe and Maite Cascon, who are currently studying towards their Master’s Degrees in Print, came to University Centre Somerset to complete a teaching day that is part of their two year programme of study. We were very fortunate to be able to offer them this opportunity.

Yuko and Maite inspired students with presentations on their artistic practices, from their own experiences of undergraduate study, to their current ideas working towards their MA Degree Show in June.

Students then took part in a group tutorial with Yuko and Maite, discussing and critiquing the work being developed in the current ‘Orientation’ module. The postgraduates commented on the ‘relaxed and supportive environment’ that the Fine Art course has, and were really impressed by the space that students are provided with during their study here.

Molly Rooke, Fine Art Programme Leader, said: ‘This was a brilliant opportunity to show our Fine Art students the opportunities available to them at the end of their study with us. Maite and Yuko gave incredibly interesting talks about their own work and really helped students to think about their practices in different ways during the group tutorial. It was an invaluable experience to gain a first-hand insight into postgraduate study and it has had a really positive impact on the students.’
