UCS has a strong heritage in Art and Design, stretching back to 1856 when the School of Art was established in Taunton. Since then, Art and Design has been at the heart of the University Centre's provision.

We work with prestigious university partners such as The Open University, University of Plymouth and Oxford Brookes University to validate our programmes, including apprenticeships.
We offer small class sizes, fantastic support and tutors with a real dedication to the student experience. What's more, our inclusive and welcoming atmosphere gives everyone an opportunity to flourish in a supportive environment where diversity is celebrated.

The iconic Arts House building based in Taunton boasts industry-focused facilities and an interdisciplinary learning environment where creativity, experimentation, problem solving and critical reflection are key to the development of every student. The Arts House encourages different art forms to work alongside one another to create a collaborative platform for students, staff and professional practitioners, one that can foster debate and spark innovation – just what the creative industries are looking for.

In 2018 we were awarded a Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) silver award for our high quality teaching, learning and outcomes for students, in particular with regards to retention and progression to graduate level employments and further study.

Teaching staff pride themselves on their ability to forge industry links. This enables students to complete work experience in prestigious organisations and often leads to exciting opportunities and employment. It is our work in enabling students to progress into high profile careers that has secured our reputation as a key source of creative input. Our Alumni have progressed into successful careers working with some of the countries leading employers in the creative industries such as the English National Theatre, Merlin Entertainment, Makeup FX departments in films such as, Star Wars, Captain America, Maleficent 2, War Horse, Sherlock Holmes, World War Z and more.
