A University Centre Somerset (UCS) apprentice has received national recognition with a Highly Commended award at the National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards 2025, placing her among the top apprentices in the country.
Katie Pitts, an Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering with Nuclear degree apprentice, was recognised at the prestigious national ceremony following her earlier success as the South West Regional Higher Apprentice of the Year.
Speaking about the achievement, Katie said:
“It truly feels like an incredible achievement, and I’m so proud. The evening was a wonderful celebration of apprenticeships and the amazing employers who make these opportunities possible. This recognition is the perfect way to round off an unforgettable journey.”
As part of her apprenticeship, Katie works with Nuclear Restoration Services, gaining valuable industry experience while developing advanced engineering knowledge through her studies.
As part of the recognition for her achievements, Katie was also invited to visit the Houses of Parliament by Rachel Gilmour, MP for Tiverton and Minehead, where she enjoyed a tour and discussed her apprenticeship journey.
Degree apprenticeships combine university-level study with professional employment, enabling students to gain valuable industry experience while earning a qualification.
However, they are also one of the most demanding study routes, requiring apprentices to balance academic learning with workplace responsibilities.
Katie’s success highlights the strength of the apprenticeship pathway and the vital role it plays in developing highly skilled engineers for the UK’s nuclear and engineering sectors.
Her achievement also demonstrates the impact of degree apprenticeships in supporting the development of the future engineering workforce.
