Student Union

Run by Students for Students

The Student Union (SU) is about more than just managing your social life. It’s also about helping everyone make the most of their time whilst studying at UCS and building a sense of community.

If you have an idea for an activity or event that will enhance college life, the Students’ Union will help make it happen. If you want to suggest ways of improving the campus facilities or set up a fundraising activity, the Union is your first point of contact.

Student Liaison Officer

Keira is based in the Student Union office within the refectory area. She runs an open-door policy, so call in at any time. Her role is to offer a link between students and staff. Keira can provide advice, guidance, support and information to help you progress through your studies and direct you to other College and support services if required. She will liaise with the services to ensure you receive suitable advice and information on any topic, ranging from financial worries to personal difficulties.

Keira is a recent graduate of Southampton Solent University so is fully aware of the problems that may arise throughout college life, and knows the appropriate members of staff within the College to contact.

Working hard with the College Student Union Executive, Keira ensures they are running a busy and exciting SU. However, this cannot be done without the help of students and all their exciting ideas concerning new clubs, events, issues and anything to do with general College life. Keira meets regularly with the HE Presidents and works closely with them to ensure everyone makes the most out of their time at the College.

The Student Union is an amazing opportunity to enjoy a great experience during your time here and remember, if we don’t know what you want, we can’t help you!

What does the Student Union do?

The Student Union is here to represent you, your interests and develop you as a student whilst having a lot of fun along the way! The Student Union is based in The CORE at The University Centre Somerset, in The HUB at Bridgwater Centre and in The Common Room at Cannington Centre.

The SU leads the learner voice, Programme reps and Curriculum Area reps are elected at the start of each year and are trained by us to represent the views of the student body – this enables the college to make positive change for current and future students. These reps can enjoy ‘team building’ days with the student union and gain a lot of experience from working well within a team to speaking confidently within a large formal meeting.

The students’ union also makes sure you have the best time when here, including meeting lots of new people. Activities and events the Student Union have organised recently include: Thorpe Park day trip, paintballing, go-karting, Clothes Show Live trip and the famous RAG day. We offer lots of different enrichment activities such as pilates, yoga, knitting club, LGBT+ and friends club, DJ club, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme plus many more. If these don't take your fancy – why not set your own club up with support from us.

There are also lots of events and activities organised at our Halls of residence which all students can get involved with including theme nights, BBQs and a mini sports day. If you have an idea of what event or activity you want to do whilst studying here then we want to know about it.

There is also a chance to get a part time job within the SU and earning money alongside your college course – if you have a passion to lead the student voice then the role as HE president at The University Centre Somerset might be right up your street! We also elect our volunteer executive committee during March each year, roles include - Heart, Body and Mind Officer, Entertainments, Clubs & Socs Officer and Vice President.

There are also have lots of other volunteering opportunities in and around Taunton - it’s your chance to get involved and really make a difference - this looks great on your CV and enhances future job prospects.

We also have have strong links with internal and external support agencies that can help you whilst you study, these include SWEDA, SWISH, 2BU, Young Carers and in-house counselling.
