Our History

We've been leading the way since 1856

The history of Bridgwater & Taunton College can be traced back to 1856 when Somerset College started life, in Taunton as the School of Art and Science. In 1888, the Bridgwater School of Art opened in George Street in Bridgwater.

When Bridgwater College and Somerset College merged in 2016, it established one of the UK’s foremost providers of educations.  Which offers one of the broadest curricula of any college in the UK.

We have launched the University Centre Somerset to define our undergraduate offer.  It is the result of our long tradition of vocational higher education, providing more than 60 higher education courses across a variety of disciplines

Today we are a thriving community with a reputation for excellence. Working closely with employers, we prepare our students for a number of careers across many industry sectors, with our alumni working in education, technology, healthcare, engineering, design and many other sectors.

The main centres that you see today, are a result of a multi-million pound investment that has enabled the College to stay at the forefront of education in the County with centres in Taunton, Bridgwater and Cannington.
