Dr Ashley Kempson is the Dean of University Centre Somerset (UCS), leading the strategic direction and delivery of higher education across the UCS College Group. With a strong academic background and experience across secondary, further and higher education, he brings a comprehensive understanding of the full learner journey and the pathways that support progression into higher-level study.
Ashley oversees the development of a high-quality, career-focused higher education offer, working closely with curriculum areas, professional services and external partners to ensure provision is aligned with regional skills needs and national priorities. He is committed to strengthening progression routes, widening participation and ensuring that higher education within a college context delivers meaningful opportunities for students and communities across Somerset.
He is recognised for his strategic leadership in driving growth, quality enhancement and regulatory alignment, with a focus on delivering positive student outcomes and sustainable impact. Ashley is passionate about creating inclusive, ambitious educational environments that transform lives and support both personal and professional development at every stage.
Vanessa is the Assistant Principal for Creative Arts and Technical Industries at Taunton College, with over 20 years’ experience within UCS College Group, progressing from Associate Lecturer to Assistant Principal. She brings a deep understanding of the organisation, its communities and its learners.
Vanessa leads a broad and diverse portfolio including Creative Arts, Digital, Business, Construction, Automotive and Teacher Training. She is recognised for driving curriculum innovation and championing employer-led learning, ensuring students benefit from high-quality, industry-standard environments that support progression into employment or further study.
She played a key leadership role in the college’s Outstanding Ofsted outcome in November 2024, with a strong focus on quality improvement, staff development and student success. Vanessa is known for her calm, people-first leadership style and her belief in education as a life-changing opportunity for learners at every stage of their journey.
Clare is the Assistant Principal for Professional & Service Industries at Taunton College, bringing over 27 years’ experience across Further and Higher Education. She has responsibility for a wide-ranging portfolio including English and Maths, Sports, Uniformed Protective Services, Hospitality, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care, Early Years and Foundation Learning.
A former student of Taunton College, Clare has a strong and enduring connection to the college and its community. Her professional background spans curriculum leadership, quality assurance and commercial delivery, alongside senior roles overseeing both educational provision and income-generating enterprises.
Clare brings extensive expertise in curriculum development and quality improvement, and has worked closely with national awarding bodies to support high standards across technical and professional pathways. She has also led successful commercial operations linked to education and training, ensuring provision remains relevant, sustainable and aligned to industry need.
Passionate about enrichment and learner progression, Clare champions opportunities such as work placements, volunteering and residential experiences to support confidence, resilience and positive destinations. Through inclusive, learner-centred leadership, she continues to drive excellence, opportunity and progression across the college.
Vinnie is the Assistant Principal for Engineering and Automotive at Bridgwater College. With many years of experience, he is committed to developing skills and fostering strong, long-term partnerships with industry.
With a background in vehicle operations and management, Vinnie has a clear understanding of industry requirements and works closely with employers to develop tailored programmes that meet local and regional skills needs while preparing students for both the current and future job market.
Vinnie is also passionate about supporting mental health and well-being and is committed to creating a positive, supportive environment for both students and staff.
