For William, starting a nursing degree wasn’t about age – it was about taking the opportunity to build a career he could be proud of.
After studying the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship at University Centre Somerset (UCS), William now works as a Registered Endoscopy Nurse, supporting patients and helping them feel comfortable during what can be a daunting experience.
Finding the right route into nursing
William took a different route into nursing, having previously worked as a Navigation Officer on a ship before moving to the UK.
After arriving in the UK, William continued to build his skills and qualifications, completing his Functional Skills qualifications at Taunton College before gaining his Nursing Associate Level 4 qualification at UWE. He then progressed to the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship at UCS, taking the next step towards becoming a qualified nurse.
Throughout his studies, William was supported by his lecturers and the wider UCS team, helping him balance the demands of studying with his existing commitments.
For William, the course provided an opportunity to develop a broad understanding of nursing and prepare for life as a qualified healthcare professional.
Age doesn’t matter because I finished at 51!

Making a difference every day
William now works as a Registered Endoscopy Nurse, where supporting patients is at the heart of his role.
He says that one of the most rewarding parts of his job is comforting patients who may feel nervous or anxious and helping them feel more at ease.
For William, being able to help people is what makes his career so fulfilling.
His progression from working at sea, to developing his qualifications in the UK, to studying at UCS and becoming a Registered Nurse demonstrates where determination, support and the right education can take you.
William’s advice
Looking back on his experience, William’s message to anyone considering starting a course is simple: don’t let your age hold you back.
Having completed his degree at 51, William knows first-hand that it’s never too late to take on a new challenge and work towards a career you’re passionate about.
He also encourages prospective students not to worry about whether they will have enough time to study. With the support of teaching staff, he found that he was able to manage the demands of the course.
