Course Overview

The Level 5 apprenticeship in Early Years Lead Practitioner is designed for experienced early years professionals who lead practice, support teams and ensure high quality provision for babies and young children.

It develops the advanced knowledge, skills and behaviours required to take responsibility for pedagogical leadership, inclusive practice and the effective implementation of statutory and non-statutory frameworks across a setting.

Apprentices develop expertise in child development, safeguarding, curriculum design and assessment, while strengthening their ability to mentor and coach colleagues, work in partnership with parents and external professionals, and contribute to continuous improvement. The programme integrates theory with workplace practice, enabling apprentices to reflect on their leadership approach, model best practice and respond confidently to the diverse needs of children, families and communities.

On completion, apprentices are equipped to operate as senior practitioners or leaders within early years settings, supporting quality assurance, compliance and positive outcomes for children. The apprenticeship also provides a recognised pathway for progression, enhancing professional status and supporting the wider workforce by promoting reflective, evidence-informed and ethically grounded leadership in early years education and care.

Topics may include:

  • Child development, learning theories and evidence-informed practice for babies and young children
  • Pedagogical leadership, curriculum planning and assessment in early years settings
  • Safeguarding, child protection and promoting children’s welfare
  • Inclusive practice, special educational needs and partnership working with families and professionals
  • Coaching, mentoring and supporting the development of the early years workforce
  • Quality assurance, reflective practice and continuous improvement within early years provision.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is through a combination of workplace-based evidence and independent end-point assessment. During the programme, apprentices are assessed through practical observations, written assignments and reflective accounts that demonstrate how knowledge and skills are applied in their own setting.

Tutors and assessors observe practice in the workplace to ensure high-quality leadership, safeguarding and effective early years pedagogy. Apprentices are encouraged to evaluate their own performance, gather feedback from colleagues and reflect on the impact of their practice on children, families and staff.

The apprenticeship concludes with an end-point assessment, which typically includes a professional discussion and review of a portfolio of evidence, confirming full competence as an early years lead practitioner.

Progression Options

Successful completion of the Level 5 apprenticeship in Early Years Lead Practitioner supports progression into senior and leadership roles such as deputy manager, setting manager or early years curriculum lead.
